OUR DEFINING MOVIE MOMENT

- FEBRUARY 6, 2019 -

There is a long and prestigious list of movies Hamilton watches have appeared in , and one of the most impactful and important was the 2014 film, Interstellar. We created a watch especially for the movie and it is integral to the plot. Without the watch – known by fans as ‘The Murph’ - the movie would have no defining moment.

Set in a dystopian future, a team of NASA scientists and pilots use interstellar travel to try to find a new habitable planet and save humanity.

After Interstellar’s premier in Los Angeles on October 26, 2014, it was seen by millions and won 44 of the 144 total awards it was nominated for globally. We worked closely with the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, and production designer Nathan Crowley to get the movie watch just right.

Since day one, we’ve had requests to produce ‘The Murph’. Now, five years after the release of Interstellar, we’ve made the Khaki Field Murph.  There is one tiny difference from the movie watch and it’s a nod to one of the key Interstellar moments. The seconds hand is printed with the word ‘Eureka’ in Morse code. This is barely visible to the naked eye but can be seen with the aid of a watchmaker’s loupe.

The Khaki Field Murph has a 42 mm stainless steel case and black dial protected by sapphire crystal. It is powered by the exclusive H-10 automatic movement  with up to 80 hours of power reserve and completed with a black calf leather strap. The first 2,555 pieces of the Khaki Field Murph will be presented in a limited edition box, designed by Nathan Crowley. 2,555 days is the equivalent of seven Earth years, which is equal to one hour on Miller’s planet in the film.

The special box was created using thin pieces of acrylic to represent the timelines of the film’s famous tesseract. It holds the Khaki Field Murph at its heart, recalling the defining moment of the movie. It is a design Interstellar fans will recognize instantly.

The watch is a firm favorite with the film’s fans, but why is it so important to the Interstellar story? (Warning: spoiler alert!)

Despite its futuristic title, Interstellar has a love story at its heart. It’s the story of a father, Cooper, and his daughter, Murph. Cooper, a former NASA pilot, travels to another dimension in hopes of finding a new home for humanity. The mission means Cooper must leave Earth. Before he leaves, he gives Murph his watch.

From the fifth dimension, Cooper realizes that he is able to travel to a specific point and place in time on Earth to communicate with his daughter. He sends her a message using Morse code through the seconds hand of the watch he left her. As a child, she deciphers the code but assumes it is the work of a ghost.

As an adult, and a scientist, Murph returns to her childhood bedroom for a final look. Cooper now holds the key to saving humanity. He transmits the quantum data he has in Morse code through the seconds hand of the watch. Murph finally realizes that the ghost of her childhood was her father trying to reach her through time and space.

Back at the NASA facility, Murph transcribes and deciphers the code from her watch. It will help humans to escape the dying Earth. When she finally works out the formula, she throws her papers into the air, shouting “Eureka!”

Our defining movie moment is now a defining moment for Interstellar fans, who can finally own the Khaki Field Murph.
