Inspired by the Plain and Engraved models of 1926, the American Classic Cushion brings one of Hamilton's most distinctive historical timepieces into the present. An icon of Art Deco watch design, it combines the geometric forms and bold proportions of the era with contemporary mechanical craftsmanship and refined details, reimagined for a new generation of enthusiasts.
A design shaped by the 1920s
During the 1920s, Hamilton began exploring watch shapes beyond the traditional round and square case. Rectangular, tonneau and cushion-shaped designs reflected a growing appetite for modern forms and personal expression. Introduced in 1926, the Cushion became one of the most distinctive examples of this creative period. With its softly curved silhouette and architectural lines, the Cushion embodied the visual language of the Art Deco era. Offered in both plain and engraved versions, it stood apart from conventional wristwatches and helped establish Hamilton's reputation for original design.
On the silver screen
Nearly a century later, the Cushion appeared in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Nolan collaborated with Hamilton to identify period-correct timepieces for the film's central characters. The Cushion B was worn by Cillian Murphy in his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, its authentic American heritage and distinctive Art Deco character making it a natural fit for the role.
Reimagined for today
While remaining faithful to the original design, the American Classic Cushion is powered by the new H-42 hand-wound mechanical caliber. Its exceptionally slim construction preserves the proportions that defined the 1926 model, while an open caseback reveals the beauty of its mechanical movement. Available in 30mm and 34mm sizes, the collection reinterprets the distinctive details of the original Cushion through a variety of dial designs, from Arabic to Roman numerals, a small seconds display at 6 o'clock and plain or engraved case finishes. Each model balances the character of the original Cushion with the expectations of contemporary watch enthusiasts.
